This is dangerous territory to maneuver and you need to keep your wits about you. Choosing sides when a couple breaks up is always difficult but once you do, you’ll have trouble going back to the side you didn’t choose until some time has passed. But never underestimate the power of the gays. The Jack can keep SD and his Jill as friends if he just thinks about it as multi-tasking, sort of like giving yourself a facial and being able to shop online, listen to music to use for your cardio class and tweet all at the same time. Jack needs to lay down some ground rules. When with Jill, he should agree to listen to no more than five minutes of rants and raves about ex-boyfriend SD. Offer support without slamming SD (because let’s face it, while it’s fun at the moment to have someone agree with you and slaughter someone it really doesn’t do anyone any good). If the Jill goes over more than 5 minutes, take her someplace to shop for something – shiny objects always work for distraction. When Jack is with SD, he needs to allot the same five minutes of complaining but call a flag on the play if it goes any longer than that and if it does take him shopping because you know how us gays love to dress up the straightees and usually it throws the SD off balance enough where he’ll forget about the Jill and just get overwhelmed that there are so many cuts of jeans and that his ass looking good in them is so important, a fact he doesn’t want or like to think about. It’s not going to be easy but a good Jack knows how to fit in anywhere and can make this work as long as he keeps the ground rules in place. As Fanny Brice says to her mother in Funny Girl about Nick Arnstein, “He’s a gentleman and a gentleman fits in anyplace.” (To which her mother replies, “A sponge fits in anyplace.”) Song Solution: Why Can’t We Be Friends by WAR!
